THE RENTAL GIRL SPOTLIGHT SESSIONS: VICTORY

THE RENTAL GIRL SPOTLIGHT SESSIONS: VICTORY

The Rental Girl Spotlight Sessions are like one-on-one, virtual coffee dates with our real estate agents. We ask one of The Rental Girls 5 simple questions, they respond with  5 honest, insightful answers. This gives our readers a chance to get up close and personal with the real girl behind the avatars on our site, and gain further insight into The Rental Girl culture. Feel free to leave questions/curiosities in the comments section below!

Meet VICTORY,  The Rental Girl’s Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Atwater Village agent. She’s also our newest addition to The Rental Girl family and we couldn’t feel more lucky to have her on board!

Where were you born, and what brought you to Los Angeles?

I was born in the metro Detroit area of Michigan and I lived there for most of my life, but I’ve always known I wanted to live in a bigger city. I’ve lived in Chicago, New York City and now Los Angeles. To be honest, I never thought I would live here in LA. I hadn’t even visited until April 2013…then I came out here, fell in love with the Silver Lake area, found an apartment, then went back to New York to pack my things and drove across country!

That’s amazing, we’re glad to have you! When did you know you wanted to become a real estate agent, and what attracted you to The Rental Girl?

I think somehow I always knew real estate was something I wanted to do. Throughout my childhood I really pushed for being in an artistic, creative field and I didn’t see real estate as being that at the time. But even as a child I was curious about the profession. I moved every 3-4 years of my life as a kid, which could have been really hard for me but instead I found it really fun! It was exciting to think where my new life would be, who my new friends would be, which room would be mine in this house? It was always exciting to get in the car with the real estate agent and explore…I love the exploration of it all. So my relationship to what home means is why I’m really attracted to real estate, it’s not just a space…it’s a place of comfort, and I love finding that for others.

When I got to LA, I found The Rental Girl and loved all of the properties they represented. Everyone was so friendly and the company really stood out. As it turns out, I rented a place from Ellie then discovered an opportunity within the company and everything just fell into place from there!

Serendipity! Favorite thing about your neighborhood?

I really love living on the Eastside…it felt like a natural progression from Greenpoint, Brooklyn. You know what they say: Silver Lake is the Williamsburg of the West! It just seemed to click. When I got here I had this realization that back in 2009 I remembered having this very vivid dream of me living near mountains, and in Michigan there aren’t any mountains, so I didn’t know where that place was. But my heart tells me that that dream was about being here in LA, and when I wake up in the morning I have a beautiful view eastward of the mountains and I think I’m right where I’m supposed to be.

No. 1 piece of advice for renting in LA?

Expect the unexpected. Never expect that it’s going to be an easy transition…prepare for the worst and hope for the best. When I first moved out here, I’d been approved for my place, had a move-in date and thought everything was ready to go. On the way here I discovered that because my apartment was in a brand new construction building, the permits hadn’t been passed and we couldn’t move in. So we got to LA with a mini-van full of our life, necessities and cat, and realized there was nothing we could do. So we used the resources of Air BnB and stayed in hotels until we could legally enter the property 3 weeks later. So you know, everyone goes through it, I guess you could say it’s part of the Los Angeles initiation!

When you’re not busy being The Rental Girl, what do you find yourself doing?

I really thrive off of participating with multiple groups involving my spiritual path, as well as my educational path–specifically through leadership seminars and events. When I get the chance I really enjoy being outdoors, Griffith Park is my favorite place to go hike, get a fresh perspective on life and come back rejuvenated.
